ART109 Image Manipulation
Course Description:
Students develop basic image manipulation skills in a raster-based computer environment. Emphasis is placed on mastering the fundamentals of scanning, color management, photo retouching, imaging, special effects, and filters and masks.
Final Project Description:
Using the skills you have learned throughout the quarter, create an original 11x17 poster for (choose one):
- DESCRIPTIVE LYRIC: Visually represent your favorite descriptive lyric from a song or poem using the techniques you've learned in class
(suggested for GD, WDIM, DFVP, AP, & DTG students)- Use your mad Photoshop skills to clearly, graphically represent the lyrics you have chosen
- The lyric must appear on your poster
- The writers/artists name should also appear as well
- DIGITAL PAINTING: Create a detailed digital painting of a self-portrait
(suggested for MAA & GAD students)- Check out a Wacom tablet from the Media Cage to do this project
- If you need to use it overnight – get paperwork from the cage and I can sign it
- You must provide a text layer with your name on the image (should not distract from your digital painting)
- MAGAZINE COVER: Design the cover of your own magazine. Pick any concept that interests you and design the cover using the techniques you've learned in class
(suggested for FRM, ID or PH students)- Be sure to include a title, edition, article topics and images that work in unison with your theme. All titles and articles must be original

- Operate a personal computer using current operating system interfaces
- Use image manipulation software.
- Use computer hardware to manage data.
- Correlate keyboard functions with menu operations.
- Use and manage computer hardware peripherals for input, output, and storage
- Operate different kinds of peripheral hardware, including printers, scanners, external drives, and Wacom tablets.
- Apply appropriate software solutions to design problems
- Demonstrate proficiency in image manipulation software
- Apply principles of color theory.
- Apply color theory in the scanning, manipulating, and outputting of imagery.
- Compare and contrast additive and subtractive color theory.
- Manipulate layers, channels and paths.
- Identify and define which color theories apply to different input/output devices.
- Use tools, menus, and keyboard commands to perform complex image selection techniques.
- Control image characteristics (size, mode, dpi, etc.).
- Select/apply filters and layers using appropriate menus, tools, and commands.
- Prepare imagery for proofing and/or final outputting at a service bureau or other supplier.
- Save documents using the appropriate specialized file formats.
- Prepare files for output at service bureaus and printers
- Follow oral and written directions
